Spring forward

In January, I wrote about our plans for a ‘Year of Change’ at BETHEME.ME. Three months on, I’d like to update you what we’ve accomplished…

Development

Most of our effort in the last three months has been focussed on development. We have:

  • Shipped two updates to our most popular theme (BeOnePage). This included fixing a bug that caused the site footer title/icon setting not to work properly, updating WooCommerce and more.

  • Implemented the new auto-update system we promised including custom domain and hosting at updatemode.com. This allows for seamless auto-updates within the WordPress dashboard.

  • Updated our required/recommended plugin installer to be compatible with PHP8. This means that BeOnePage is now fully compatible with PHP 8.2 and WordPress 6.2.

  • Moved all our live theme demos and legacy customer portal to a new server at Linode. This should make them a little snappier.

  • Continued to improve our new website. For example, many of our legacy documentation pages were flagged in the Google Search Console due to their slow load time. We’ve temporarily replaced these with PDF versions while we work to update them. Already there are new support docs for BeOnePage like how to customise the site footer and how to change the portfolio display.

Marketing

In March, we reached over 250 unique clicks and got a nice email from the Google Search Team. We’re not a big company and our recent redesign was a risk as it was a big change from what went before—so it’s reassuring to see some small success in organic search.

Google Search Impact—250+ clicks in March 2023.

In March, we also accepted our first guest post by Frank—How to choose the perfect theme for your WordPress site. This seemed like a natural fit for what we do and is full of good advice. We have another potential guest author working on a new piece now—so check back.

Finally, our social media has been slower to mobilise than our development. Our Twitter account has been starting to get more active although we may close this account to focus our efforts elsewhere.

Our Facebook account has been suspended (twice). It happens almost instantly whenever a link to BETHEME is posted and we may not be able to recover it. There’s nothing on our site that could possibly breach their community standards. If anyone has any contacts at Facebook, please reach out.

All the best 👍
